Thinking about Sketches

I have been thinking a lot about sketches.   I love sketches and use them often. Sometimes I participate in sketch challenges and sometimes I will use one just because I like it.  I recently started scrapbooking my California Trip, but I wanted it to be unique and special, so I pulled out an old album I’d purchased that was 6x12 inches in size.  I though it would be perfect because I could add three-up page protectors and just slide the photos in where I didn’t feel like scrapbooking. Well, that was fine until I started looking for sketches in that size.

Just a hint: there aren’t many.  Pagemaps by Becky Fleck has some really good ones – but she is the master, so I don’t think that surprises anyone.

The solution, of course, was to convert full size (12x12) sketches to the 6x12 size.

So, that is what I did.  Here for your viewing pleasure are some converted sketches:

Circles Sketch

In the first one, I took the long photo and chopped it in two because the original size would have overwhelmed the page on a 6x12 layout.
Also, I lost room for the title above, so I put it below, but on the OPPOSITE corner to maintain balance and I kept the nice triangle in the design by moving on of my circles to the top left.  I then added strips for journaling because the journaling around the circle would have been super tight in the 6x12 layout.  I kept the integrity of the sketch by keeping the total photo size very similar, and the large circle and the cluster of small circles in the same place.

Next:
Oval Sketch

For this one I really wanted to keep the layout as close to the original as possible.  I loved the centered look, like an island in the middle of a sea of lovely white space.  So, I shrunk the photo (the original was 4x6 and this one is probably about 3.5x5).  I added a tab to the right of the photo. Then, I made the circle into an oval and I kept everything else pretty much exactly the same.  This shrinkage forced the journaling over a bit, but I like it better overlapping the photo anyway.

Finally:
Three Photos Sketch

This one was easy.  Basically this whole thing is exactly the same except for the size of the photos and the size of the circles.  In the 6x12 version the photo size STARTS at 3.5x5 and ends with a 1.5x2 with a wallet size in the middle.  The original started with a 4x6 and ended with a wallet size. Design-wise, nothing huge was changed to acheive this conversion.

I would love to hear some feedback on these.  If you use them, please link back and let me see what you came up with!

Thanks for stopping by, and keep it royal people!

Paper Makeup Stamps’ May Blog Hop!!

Welcome people! It is Monday and the beginning of a new month.  That means it is time for another PMS blog hop!!!

As you may know, the PMS store is going all DIGI and everything that is still available in rubber is 75% off! Go get some rubber stamps from PMS before they’re gone!

As for this hop, we are rolling it into our regular Digital Makeover Challenge.  BUT, a random commenter from the hop will win ALL the new PMS digis!!

The Challenge:

So, here is my card using some of the new images:

FlowerHopeHop

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stamps: Faith, Hope, and Love (new word and flower art!) | Weeds and Wildflowers: Life 365 digital journaling card | Cardstock: (red) DCWV | Ribbon

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a hybrid card.  I used a digital journaling card (that looks like torn cardboard) and some simple clipping masks.  The great thing about digital stamps is that some of them come as both .jpeg and .png files.  When imported into a program that can read the .png file’s blank background you can use them in digital scrapbooking and cardmaking as well as hybrid projects.

Here is a video explaining clipping masks.  Just IGNORE the first part because a digi stamp can just be opened by File>Folder>(Your Digi folder name) just like opening it in paint or whatever.  Just pay attention after the point where he says to “simplify the layer” – just open the .png stamp and go from there. (Not that that was confusing or anything!).

Now, don’t go watch that video until you finish the hop!! As follows:

Happy National Scrapbooking Day! (With Hampton Art!)

Welcome scrappers! Happy Scrappy holiday!

In celebration of tomorrow’s NSD holiday, I have created a page and a tutorial to inspire you.  I know that some people still have Easter photos that they are scrapping, so I wanted to use this page to give you some ideas about how to used Hampton Art and Clearsnap products to make a SWEET scrapbook layout.

Here we go. First, a sneak peek:

NSDLayout-3

(It wouldn’t be a PEEK if it was really in focus, now would it?)

Tutorial time:

“Decorating the Eggs”

NDSEggs1

You will need: Oval punches, scrap patterned paper, white cardstock, tiny icon punches (hearts, butterflies, ect.), Glue Gloss, Smooch Spritz, glitter

NDSEggs2

Punch several small icon shapes, attach to white cardstock with Glue Gloss.

NDSEggs3

Let dry, and then punch oval to create “egg”.

NDSEggs4

Repeat steps with different shapes and papers to add interest.

NDSEggs5

Now it’s time to color the eggs! Spray Smooch Spritz onto craft sheet or tray. Use small mister to add a bit of water in order to thin the spritz

NDSEggs6

Use paint brush to apply color to your eggs. (Note: If you wish to create a more saturated, metallic look, just spritz directly onto the egg and blot with a paper towel – the blotting really brings out the shine!)NDSEggs7

After spritz dries (quick!) apply Glue Gloss over the eggs and sprinkle with glitter.  Allow to dry completely.  Eggs, done!

"Weaving” your Basket:

NSDTut1

You will need: cream cardstock, Brown ink, Scratch Pattern stamp, paper trimmer, transparent tape, ribbon, yarn

NSDTut2 Stamp Scratch Pattern stamp from edge to edge of cardstock both vertically and horizontally to create cross hatch pattern.  Trim into 1/2 inch wide strips (the length is up to you, depending how big you want your basket).

NSDTut3

Line up several strips vertically and horizontally, overlapping each other on a piece of paper.  Tape the strips in place on ONE end – this creates a “loom” for you to weave your paper.

NSDTut4

Weave paper strips to create the body of the basket.  When the weaving is done, tape the loose end to secure the weaving BEFORE you remove it from the plain paper “loom”.

NSDTut5

Fold the loose ends to create the “rounded” bottom and sides of the basket.

NSDTut6

Use a spare paper strip to create the lip of the basket by attaching a fabric strip to it and attaching it to the body of the basket.

(I lost the natural light here, so the rest of the pictures are a bit different – oops!)

NSDTut7

Braid yarn and ribbon together to create handle and attach coordinated ribbon to basket.   Stack your “eggs” in the top!

Assembling the Page:

You will need: Your basket and eggs, Curvaceous Border stamp set and Background Borders stamp set, brown chalk ink, patterned paper, scissors, paper trimmer, chip board pieces, Smooch Spritz, letter stickers, butterfly punch, Smooch Glitz, 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 matted photo.

NSDTut8

Trim patterned papers and distress edges with scissors.

NSDTut9

Stamp border stamps around the area where your distressed papers will be attached.  Layer papers over stamped images.

Adhere extra strips of the “basket” paper to frame the distressed layers. Attach Basket (with a little fiber grass added!)eggs, photo, and title.

NSDTut10

Use Smooch Spritz to add color and shine to your chipboard pieces.  Layer the chipboard and attach to layout.

Punch butterflies. Add sparkle with Smooch Glitz and attach to layout. Add small butterfly stickers.

And HERE is the finished project!:
